3 Daily Practices for Future Success
[00:00:00] Hi folks, this is Dennis Guzik again, and welcome to the, Be the Ultimate podcast. What I want to talk about today is something I call The Daily Three. So I started this about, oh, a long time ago, while I was a young Marine officer and I've put this Daily Three into use and it has benefitted me amazingly and I think it will benefit you as well. And I know I've recommended to other people and they've told me they've put it into action and it's benefitted them as well.
[00:00:31] The Marine Corps at the time, I don't know if they still do it or have something called the daily seven and a daily seven was a set of exercises and a three mile run that you should do every day. So three mile run, pull ups, sit ups jumping jacks squat, thrust, bunch of things like that, that they say you should do every day.
[00:00:50] So in a professional sense, that's what this is, this Daily Three. And I think that if you endeavor to do these three things every day, you will be in a much better position personally professionally and over time, you'll have significant progress. Not only these leader, but in your in your career, but as a human being.
[00:01:11] So what are the daily three? Number one, train your mind. Number two, train your body. Number three, train your spirit. Let's talk about them a little bit.
[00:01:26] So number one, train your mind. So this is your most powerful. No matter what you're doing, no matter where you are, your brain, what you know is the most important asset you bring to the table. There's a lot of different ways that you can train your mind. Formal education is one, but also volunteering, asking questions be that person who puts their meat hook up in the air and says, Hey, I'd like to help. It's a way to train your mind in a way to further yourself and your professional knowledge ask questions. Okay. If you're not sure of something, ask a question and then I want to talk about probably the easiest and one of the best ways to train your mind. And that is reading. You should be reading something all the time.
[00:02:22] You should have a book that you're working on, you should read the newspaper every day. Think about it. If you just read, 10 minutes every day, about 20 pages, think about how many books you would go through in a year, and how much further along in your professional and personal knowledge, you'd be as compared to say your peers.
[00:02:45] This is an easy thing to do. And in future podcasts, I'm going to talk about a list of books that I've been reading or have read that have impacted me. And I think you would benefit from, so number one thing out there, train your mind, most powerful tool you have. And one of the easiest ways to do that you could do is just by reading. And that means sometimes on your downtime or five minutes, 10 minutes every morning, just read something.
[00:03:13] So let's talk about training your body. So the Marine Corps is big into physical fitness, and so you don't have to tell them any Marines to work out, but it's a, it's something that in general, all the society could use more of.
[00:03:26] But the point that I'm coming from here is that there's a secondary benefit to the physical training aspect. I've seen this deployed in combat, and I've seen this in stressful situations is that people in better physical condition tend to make better decisions under challenging and very stressful conditions.
[00:03:48] And so if you think look, I'm not going to join the Marine Corps. I'm not going in there. I'm not going to be in combat. I don't need to worry about this. You're wrong. Okay. So why do I say that? If you don't think that a job may entail a lot of late night deadlines, you're there at midnight working on a proposal or doing something very stressful.
[00:04:09] That's going to happen in almost everybody's career. And the better physical condition you're in the better you're going to be able to handle that and the better decisions you're going to make, especially in a sleep deprived environment. And I don't mean when I say train that you got to do everything hardcore, that you got to run marathons, that you gotta be out there bench pressing 350 pounds. Just do something that improve your physical fitness every day and as well as avoid the things that, that harm your physical fitness.
[00:04:38] The last one on there, I talk about training your spirit, training your soul. What I mean is, this is more personal . Everything we know about humans point to some subconscious need for understanding.
[00:04:53] And as Clauswitz said ,"The moral is to the physical as three is to one." So this is hugely important. You need to do things that train your ethics, that train your better understanding of life. This could be religion. This could be meditation, mindfulness. Somehow you need to incorporate this sort of training into your day.
[00:05:17] So in conclusion, if you do what I'm telling you here are these three things. Every day, doesn't take much time. Even when you look at it, a half hour workout, 10 minutes of mental training, 10 minutes is spiritual training.
[00:05:32] You're talking less than an hour a day. And the gains that you'll make on a personal and professional level will be significant.
[00:05:43] So I highly recommend you do this and look forward to hearing what you think. Thank you. Bye.
